Watch: Twin Towers Cameo Appearances in Movies

Something you should know about me, I love New York. More than that, though, I love New York in film. It?s the reason I?ll go see ?The Smurfs.? It?s the reason Grand Central Station is one of my favorite places on earth. It?s the reason ?Jason Takes Manhattan? is by default my favorite ?Friday the 13th? movie (although the same logic doesn?t work with ?The Muppets Take Manhattan?). I?ll buy any book about New York in film and watch any online montage highlighting the Big Apple?s appearances on the big screen. Last year, I viewed Moviefone?s ?We Love New York ... in the Movies? video over and over and over. Now I?m doing the same with a new compilation of clips specifically featuring the Twin Towers.

Obviously this one is particularly sentimental and especially timely. Can you believe that it?s already September 2011 and we will be commemorating the tenth anniversary of the fall of the World Trade Center in just ten days? The passage of time is almost as unbelievable as the very fact that these towers are no longer there. Also, they?ve already been gone for a third of how long they were alive. The ?supercut,? compiled by Dan Meth, is titled ?Twin Tower Cameos,? yet it includes some of the WTC?s more prominent roles, including those in the 1976 ?King Kong? remake and ?The Wiz.? Surely there are plenty of movies missing?I don?t think I saw ?Trading Places? in there, for one major omission?but it does highlight a lot, most of them with very quick glimpses of the buildings in the background.

Something special about the Twin Towers in cinema, also, is that it didn?t only frequent New York films. There are a lot of New Jersey films in the bunch, and we get a sense of how significant the landmark was in terms of bearings. In the past decade the New York skyline hasn?t been the same, and neither has its identity and identification in the movies. I wonder if the new single tower will have the same kind of presence.

Check out the montage after the jump and let me know of any glaring exclusions you wish were in there.

I wonder, should ?Man on Wire? have had a spot? (see comments.) And speaking of documentaries involving the Twin Towers, if you are a New Yorker you can now check out the emotional new 9/11 film ?Rebirth? at IFC Center, where it opened yesterday. Tomorrow it also debuts in Landstown, Pennsylvania.

The intro to sex and the city, or a lot of the shows in the first 3 or 4 seasons. the first show of the 3rd season has a good shot from a ferry.

Oh, that was one of those super quick flashes. I had to make a real effort to pause it just to see what the clip was. Thanks!

?Man on Wire? @ 2:52 (in case you were thinking it wasn?t there).
